Having Repeatedly Destroyed Earth, Emmerich Sets Sights on The Bard

"2012," "The Day After Tomorrow," "Godzilla," "Independence Day"... Roland Emmerich has laid waste to untold acres of land -- much of it New York City. Now he's tackling the centuries-old rumors that William Shakespeare was a fraud.

"Anonymous," according to a synopsis on IMDB, is:

About who actually wrote the plays of William Shakespeare-- Edward De Vere, Earl of Oxford-- set against the backdrop of the succession of Queen Elizabeth I, and the Essex Rebellion against her.

Say what you will about Emmerich's filmography, they guy has assembled a pretty good cast.

“We have Vanessa Redgrave as Queen Elizabeth; David Thewlis as William Cecil, old and young; and Rhys Ifans as The Earl Of Oxford. It’s a true English cast and I’m really proud of it," he told Empire. "There’s 12 main characters and 20 or 30 other characters, and each of the characters is really good.”

The film, which Emmerich goes on to describe as an "historical thriller," begins shooting this March in Berlin.
