Vin Diesel To Star In Third “Riddick” Film

Today brings news that Vin Diesel will star in a third movie in the David Twohy-helmed “Riddick” franchise. And if that news makes you scratch your head, well I assure you that you are not alone in that regard.

However, few people know that while “The Chronicles of Riddick” was a critical failure, it actually grossed over $100 million worldwide and spawned a hit video game series. Thus, we will get a third movie, titled “Riddick.” My suggested title of “The Fast And The Riddickulous” was summarily rejected by Lionsgate. The full scoop from Variety:

Vin Diesel is going back to the future to topline and produce a third chapter in the "Chronicles of Riddick" franchise…

Plot details are being kept under wraps. But insiders say the third outing will hew closer in tone to the cult hit "Pitch Black"…

And thank goodness for that, for while “Pitch Black” was a fun and nasty little space monster flick, the second “Riddick” movie attempted to construct a big Star Trekky mythology around the whole Riddick character. Judi Dench was involved. It didn’t work. If the series can go back to being a modest affair designed to make you jump out of your seat, perhaps this won’t seem like such an odd idea. Beats a sequel to “The Pacifier.”
