“The Last Airbender” Bends to 3D Pressure

"The Last Airbender" might feature some super powers, but it's going to need some help to go to 3D.

Paramount Pictures is jumping into the 3D fray and will convert the M. Night Shyamalan film into 3D using Stereo D, the company that worked on James Cameron's "Avatar," according to Deadline Hollywood.

The release date will not be affected and will remain July 2. Insiders say the conversion will cost between $5 to $10 million. But as "Clash of the Titans" proved, that money is well justified on the financial side with the number of people willing to pay extra cash at special movie theaters to see that extra dimension.

Guess we'll have to shell out the extra $5 or so to see if this 3D conversion has any positive effect on the film itself. While "Clash" might have scored on the box office, there was really no impact on the film whatsoever with the conversion other than heightened expectations. The movie's 3D effects were minimal at parts -- laughable in others -- despite all the hype around them.

And a strong case could be made that these kinds of crass 3D conversion attempts could continue to sidetrack the 3D revolution on a gimmick side road.
