Rose McGowan Talks ‘Red Sonja'

"Grindhouse" and "Charmed" siren Rose McGowan is set to storm the big screen as the scarlet-haired swordstress Red Sonja in a movie update being produced by her "Grindhouse" director (and husband) Robert Rodriguez.

McGowan, who has never been afraid to get physical for her roles, told Access Hollywood last night at the Broadway premiere of Jane Fonda's "33 Variations" that she will be back in action soon to prep for the part after being sidelined by a trip the operating room.

"I just had a big surgery on my elbow and on my wrist, so I can start my training again," she revealed.

The character was previously portrayed by Brigitte Nielsen in the 1985 sword and sorcery action film, aptly titled "Red Sonja." The film co-starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, who at the time was still riding high on the movie trail he blazed with his role as Conan the Barbarian.

McGowan's years of on-set bravery, she admits, is what sent her to go under the knife. Though she brushes off her setback as a typical work hazard and "just damage from doing my own stunts."

"I do about 98 percent of them, which often results in injuries," she admitted.

She even joked about the near medieval methods the doctors used to get her back to work.

"They took some bone out. I actually asked if it was with a little saw and he said it was actually a chisel and a hammer. Modern times," she laughed. "Now I'm good. In about a month of more arm rehab, I'm ready to go."

"Red Sonja" is scheduled for release next year.
