Tom Cruise & Denzel Washington To Face Off In Spy Thriller

Tom Cruise & Denzel Washington are set to square off against one another in the big screen adaptation of “The Matarese Circle,” Access Hollywood has learned.

Tom is in final negotiations to play Russian spy Vasili Taleniekov, who faces American intelligence operative Brandon Scofield, played by Denzel, a source confirmed to Access.

In the movie, the two rivals are forced to work together to thwart an international political conspiracy conceived by the mysterious Matarese organization.

The movie is based on a novel by Robert Ludlum, who penned the “Bourne” trilogy.

The novel is set during the cold war, but screenwriters Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, who penned Angelina Jolie’s “Wanted,” have updated the movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The spy thriller will be directed by “Eastern Promises” director David Cronenberg and is expected to be Tom’s early summer project, in addition to other projects including the thriller “The Tourist,” with Spyglass Entertainment and the Universal comedy “Food Fight.”
