Dallas Zoo Giraffe Gives Birth Live

All eyes were on smart phones and tablets as Katie, the reticulated giraffe, gave birth at the Dallas Zoo Friday.

The birth, complete with multiple camera angles, was broadcast live, but only to smart phones, tablets and Animal Planet on TV.

The live feed from inside the giraffe barn at the Dallas Zoo's Giants of the Savanna habitat followed from the moment Katie went into the labor to the baby giraffe's first steps.

The Dallas Zoo has been waiting 15 months for the big event. The zoo said labor started at about 5:04 p.m.

The baby giraffe was born at 5:59 p.m. and was standing and taking steps by 7 p.m.

Giraffes give birth standing up, the zoo says the baby giraffe fell about  six feet to the ground.

The Dallas Zoo says it is waiting to measure and weigh the baby giraffe, but it s expected to be about 6 feet tall and weighing between 120-150 lbs.

This is Katie's second calf, her first calf Jamie was born in 2011 and is currently living at the zoo.
