Oprah Winfrey Admits to Mistakes With OWN

Oprah Winfrey says she made "101 mistakes" launching her OWN network

Oprah Winfrey said that if she knew back when she was launching her OWN network what she knows now she would have made "some different choices."

“I would say if I was writing a book about it, I could call the book '101 mistakes," Winfrey told CBS This Morning on Monday.

Winfrey, 58, launched OWN, Jan. 1 2011, following a 25-year reign on the television as the host of  “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” But less than two years after OWN's launch, the network laid off 30 staffers and cancelled Rosie O’Donnell’s talk show in March due to poor ratings.

The network, a collaboration between Winfrey and Discovery Communications, struggled to maintain a sizable audience, Reuters reported.

Winfrey told CBS she should have waited until she wrapped up "The Oprah Winfrey Show” in May 2011 before launching OWN.

"It's like having the wedding when you know you are not ready and you are walking down the aisle, and you are saying 'I don't know 'maybe we should have postponed it,'" Winfrey said.

Winfrey said she remains dedicated to OWN despite the layoffs, bad press, and the sense of failure from first-year stumbles.  She said that she warned Discovery she could not spearhead the network alone.

"I believe that I am here to fulfill a calling," Winfrey said. "Because I am a female who is African-American who's been so blessed in the world, there is never going to be a time to quit. I will die in the midst of doing what I love to do."
