Break Out the Board

Board Up Miami is coming to town, don’t get left in its wake

Spring in Miami is a lot like summer everywhere else. The sun is up, the surf is steady and the beach is beckoning. Summer in Miami, however, is unlike anywhere else on Earth (a.k.a. hotter than hell). So if you’re going to have a beach-centered showcase, now is the time.

Get your surf on this week when Board Up Miami draws wakeboard enthusiasts from far and wide to Miami’s shores April 23 through 25.

Think you have what it takes to brave the waves? The competition brings some of the best professional wakeboarding athletes to compete against those willing to give it a go in the water. Top amateurs take note: This could be your big break on the wake with prizes including a purse of $10,000.

On Friday, the US Open of Wakeboarding gets underway when adrenaline junkies strapped to speedboats do some serious flipping and flying through the air. Amateurs who score in the top of the Open get a chance to ride alongside the big guys on Saturday.

But the fun isn’t limited to the sea only. The addition of a 4,000-square-foot street course this year gives boarders of the skating variety a chance to roll over the competition. Contests for best trick and best amateur may bring a whole new Tony Hawk straight out of Miami to the big park.

Music, swimsuit fashion shows, Nike’s Swim Miami and a Dragon Boat race round out the festivities, with proceeds from a portion of the events benefiting H2O’s Foundation.

If ever there was a weekend to get wet, this is it. Are you ready to dive in?
