BSO Searching for Driver Who Fled After Fatally Hitting Bicyclist in Pompano Beach

Authorities are searching for a driver who fled the scene after fatally hitting a bicyclist in Pompano Beach last month.

Broward Sheriff's Office officials said 55-year-old Alvin Tubbs was riding in the 3300 block of North Dixie Highway around 8 p.m. on Sept. 22 when he was struck by two vehicles. He was taken to Broward Health North where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives say Tubbs was crossing the street outside the designated crosswalk when he was struck by the two cars. One driver stayed at the scene but the other fled after dragging Tubbs about 50 feet.

Authorities are looking for the driver, who slowed down, opened a car door and looked back at the victim before driving away. The vehicle that fled is a metallic beige Toyota Corolla that was made between 2003 and 2008. It should have damage on the left front fender area, officials said.

"If the individual doesn't know they hit a person and they repaired their car, coming forward to the sheriff's office will give us the information we need to close out the investigation to give the family some closure," BSO Det. Donnard Huneke said. "But leaving the issue open leaves a lot of pain for the family and the victim's friends."

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
