Experiment With This

Film tour comes to Miami

Ben Balcom and Josh Weissbach are just two regular guys making experimental films and taking them on the road. The filmmakers are spending three months on an eighteen state, U.S. tour they’ve titled, Heap Us ‘Round Our Ruins: An Interstate Film Circuit. The brain-bending cinema will make for good conversation and maybe a little mind-expansion.

Weissbach is no stranger to South Florida, he spent some time here last year, recording and researching his film, "Interiors of the Liquid Gap." It takes on a subject dear to many locals’ hearts, Cuban exiles and their experiences of the spaces they inhabited from Cuba to America.

Don’t expect some run-of-the-mill movie -  we mentioned they’re experimental. Though the dialog remains linear, the imagery is abstract. To bring home the artsy nature of Interiors, the film is shot in Super 8 and 16mm. Weissbach’s traveling companion, Balcom, examines the line between dream and reality, characterized by the appearance and disappearance of narrative.

Maybe your intellect has been stunted since college; this is your chance to workout your noggin.

Amidst all the other coffee shops, community centers and art galleries, the ‘Round Our Ruins tour is hitting Sweat Records on Saturday and the Miami Beach Cinematheque Sunday at 8 p.m.
