Jerlis Matos was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with three counts, including home invasion with a firearm and attempted murder.

According to an arrest report, Matos and another man were inside of the apartment of Alexauri Rodriguez off Bay Drive on September 23, 2017 before leaving. A short time later, two men broke into the apartment and stole over $50,000 in jewelry from Rodriguez before assaulting him and later shooting Rodriguez as he tried to escape.

Rodriguez was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he survived his injuries from the single bullet that went through his back and leg.

Police say that Matos lived in the same apartment complex and moved out shortly after the shooting, moving to Houston, Texas. Officials connected him to the case according to phone records showing Matos had been communicating with another person, Carlos Alvarez, for a similar home invasion.

Matos was ordered held without bond Wednesday. Attorney information wasn't available.
