Mother of 1-Year-Old Boy Who Died After Being Left in Hot Car Facing Manslaughter Charge

The mother of a 1-year-old boy who died after he was left inside a hot car for hours in Pembroke Pines back in July has been arrested on a manslaughter charge, police said Wednesday.

Emily Bird, 34, turned herself in to police and was taken into custody Wednesday on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated manslaughter in the death of Eli Bird, Pembroke Pines Police said.

"I can't imagine a parent overcoming this suffer," said Lawrence Hashish, Bird's attorney.

Officers and fire officials responded to a report for medical assistance at around 5 p.m. on July 13 in a parking lot in the 2200 block of North University Drive, where they found the 17-month-old child in his car seat, officials said.

"She left to work and she thought she dropped the child off at the daycare center," Hashish said. "(She) went to pick him up and realized he was not there, her son in her car."

Authorities performed CPR and rushed Eli Bird to the hospital but he didn't make it. Police said he may have been in the car for up to eight hours.

“It caused her to relive the incident," Hashish said. "It’s been a nightmare ever since and has rehashed the pain and suffering."

Bird bailed out of jail early Thursday morning.
