New Lamborghini Engineered Artwork on Wheels

NBC 6's Roxanne Vargas gives her take on driving the Gallardo LP 550-2 Spyder

It’s Italian art on wheels – long, low and lean. It’s a Lamborghini. Enough said, right?

Maybe not, as Lamborghini is now debuting a new piece of perfection for its enthusiasts, the Gallardo LP 550-2 Spyder.

Lamborghini’s first-ever two-wheel drive vehicle, it has a top speed of 199 mph and roars from 0 to 62 in less than 4.2 seconds.

For years, Lamborghini has been known as that power vehicle with speed and agility that hugs every corner as you push the car for more speed. I got behind the wheel of the new Gallardo Spyder and believe me – there is nothing to be intimidated about when it comes to pushing this car.

While you still hear the roar of the engine behind you, the Spyder purrs like a kitten – smooth and chic almost – part of what Lamborghini says is its continuous evolution to serve all consumers.

“I think you’ll find that it’s the marriage of Italian engineering and performance but with our parent company’s hand over it, Volkswagen Audi, you have the German engineering insight into the car,” said Lamborghini USA’s chief operating officer, Michael Lock.

I loved driving this vehicle, I really did. Not only because I can say I’ve been behind the wheel of a Lamborghini – twice – but because it is such a classic and admirable piece of engineered artwork on wheels. NBC 6 photojournalist Abel Aluart couldn’t help himself either. He turned the camera over to our instructor, Kelly, and really pushed the Spyder to its limit.

Lamborghini says that South Florida is one of the most successful markets, and is expecting big things for the Spyder here. The car is priced at $211,000.

“This is going to be a monster hit for us in South Florida. It’s got the two-wheel drive, responsive steering, traditional rear wheel thump in the back for sport car drivers, but it’s a Spyder, which is perfect for South Florida,” Lock said.
