Half of the tag-team behind the MIA's beloved Sweat Records and 1/3 the gang who gives you (((Shake))), Jsin Jimenez has done more for our city than any 10 loudmouths can even pretend. (((Shake)))'s latest craze is the dubstep extravaganza known as Get Low, now in its 10th month at Vagabond. And this Thursday the gang goes lower than it's ever gone before, with a night of all-local DJs. You have been warned.
You and Lolo own Sweat Records, which is so much more than a record store. Is there a philosophy behind the joint? Sweat Records prides itself as a hub for Miami's alternative music scene. We were recently awarded a Knight Arts Grant to help us promote the arts through movie screenings, comedy shows, craft workshops and live music. Every city needs a place where they can find rare music, drink coffee and watch a good local band. Sweat is that place in Miami.
Of the local acts Sweat stocks, what are some of the hottest recent releases? The Jacuzzi Boys "No Seasons" is a stellar rock record. Also on my list would be Surfer Blood's "Astro Coast," Raffa & Rainer "No Mercy" and Otto von Schirach's "Bass Low 12" on BassHead Music.
Sweat also co-produces live shows. Who are some of the more notable acts you've helped bring down, where did they play and how has Miami responded? Recent favorites would be Glass Candy at our weekly "Fridays at The Vagabond" party this past September. I also loved the Matt & Kim show at the Upper Eastside Garden back in March. Both shows had huge turnouts. Soon we'll announce a big-time headliner for our five-year anniversary show on April 17, so stay tuned for that.
You, graffiti artist AHOLSNIFFSGLUE and Slim Biscayne (aka Dominic Sirianni) host Vagabond's (((Shake))) parties. What's the big idea behind the action? Every Thursday we get the 305's best group of party people together for a night of dancing and good vibes. We play old school hip hop, Miami Bass, freestyle, Nintendo on the projector and serve late-night eats on the patio. In Miami, people party like it's their job, so our motto has always been, "Do your job."
Once a month (((Shake))) goes dubstep with Get Low. What's that all about? As a fan of dubstep for a couple years, I was thrilled by its explosion at last year's Winter Music Conference and knew Downtown Miami was ready for it's own event. (((Shake))) was the perfect fit, as I knew the Miami Bass lovers would welcome dubstep with open arms. I was lucky enough to get BassHead Music's Juan BassHead as our resident DJ, and Get Low was born last June. Since then we've brought many huge international artists to Miami for the first time and have gained recognition for ourselves as the premier dubstep event in Florida.
