Anyone who's ever watched The World Series of Poker knows Vanessa Rousso, after all she's placed in the money a combined 13 times. Those who also play the game know that the best places to table are with Miami Poker Society. This weekend MPS and Legal Services of Greater Miami are bringing the Lady Maverick to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino for some very high stakes action. The event is called Betting for Justice, and Niteside got MPS chief Lou Stadler to give us the lowdown.
Wanna tell us a quick bit about Betting for Justice? BFJ is our first official Miami Poker Society event at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood. Tournament starts at noon on Saturday, January 21st. Buy-in is $150 and first place takes home $10,000.
Who's LSGM and why'd you decide on back 'em? One of our MPS players, Kevin Probst, works with Legal Services of Greater Miami as an attorney. He got me in touch with Marcia Rabinowitz there, who is nothing short of amazing, and when Marcia told me that LSGMI was looking to do a poker tourney to raise funds in lieu of their recent massive state funding cuts, I was "all-in".
How'd you manage to swing a star such as Vanessa Russo? Vanessa is a former UM Law School alum and works with Legal Services. This will be an awesome homecoming for Vanessa; before dominating the world, she cut her chops at the Hard Rock.
So which came first -- her or Hard Rock? Vanessa was in for the event, as I've been, from the onset. William Mason and Jeff Newsome at Hard Rock were extremely happy to host.
And this will be MPS's first foray into Seminole country? YES! We have over 50 MPS players that will be playing and will without a doubt leave an MPS stamp at the Rock that Saturday!
Are there plans on making this (or anything else) a regular event? This year we will be doing MPS events all over South Florida. We have the largest amateur bar poker night in the state at Waxy O'Connor's South Beach on Tuesdays, and are very excited to expand our horizons.
