‘Say Something': Family, Miami Cops Seek Teen Basketball Star's Killer

What to Know

  • November murder of 18-year-old Malcolm Nicholas remains a mystery

Nearly three months after a local teen basketball star was shot and killed in Miami, family members and police are still searching for answers.

Someone gunned down 18-year-old Malcolm Nicholas near Northwest 17th Street and 5th Avenue back on Nov. 12, but the shooting remains a mystery.

On Thursday, officers passed out flyers in the Overtown neighborhood asking for information on the murder.

"We all loved him, he loved everyone. He didn’t deserve this," mother Candice Dean said.

"It’s like it happened yesterday," father Malcolm Nicholas said.

Police haven't released much about their investigation, including whether detectives believe the teen was the intended target.

"By everyone’s account, Malcolm was a wonderful young man," Miami Police Chief Jorge Colina said.

The teen's father said his son had been in town for an aunt's 50th birthday celebration. Nicholas attended Tennessee Prep School and had two Division 1 offers.

He was shot while walking to his grandmother's house from a nearby basketball court.

"Say something, please, please, our lives will never be the same again," Dean said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
