Parts of Southwest Miami-Dade are going to smell sweeter starting Tuesday morning as a landmark location opens their doors for the new season.
Fans began lining up well before sunrise outside Knaus Berry Farms, located off SW 248th Street in Redland, ahead of the first day for the 2018 fall season as what started as a small fruit stand over six decades ago has become a local treasure serving cinnamon rolls, vegetables, milkshakes and more.
"We started with strawberries (and) my mother in law had some cookies at the stand one day," said business partner Tom Blocher. "We went from cookies to a huge cinnamon roll with crushed pineapple on top and it was just her."
The location is open until the last Saturday of April from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays as they are closed on Sunday as well as Thanksgiving Day, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
"I usually get here early because I come for a lot of friends to pick up," said customer Irvin Gordon.
Customers can place phone orders for items except for Saturdays and holidays.
"We'll be here Saturday to do it again all over with the rest of the family," said Maria Rodriguez, who waited hours for her treats.
If you plan on taking part in the delicious treats that Knaus Berry Farms has to offer, officials remind you that it is cash only with a dozen cinnamon rolls costing $11. Customers are advised to come midweek to avoid the long weekend lines – with holiday seasons being busier than other times.
