We're Sweet on Midtown's Sugarcane

Cocktails, apps and the Spam Allstars helped celebrate the opening of Midtown's Sugarcane -- again

Maybe you’ve already been to Midtown's newest hotspot, but, although Sugarcane opened its doors on the hush-hush earlier this year, the stylish restaurant became such a savory success they decided to unveil it all over again.

“It’s like being in the New York Meat Packing District, 15 years ago,” said Matthew Johnson, owner of Sugarcane. “This is a party for our friends, the people who have supported us.”

The chic unveiling party was filled with unique cocktails, music by the Spam Allstars and yummy appetizers that included sliders, oysters, and Japanese eggplant. Executive Chef, Timon Ballon, inspires all the food.

“There is a variety of foods to choose from," Ballon said. “We touch the regions of Japan, a little bit of Latin America, we try to cover every country that grows sugarcane.”

Amongst the crowd was Miami socialite and shoe designer Lisa Pliner, who could not get enough of the food.

“The food is unbelievable, I've been eating away and can't wait to come back,” said Pliner.

Laura Posada, wife of NY Yankee catcher Jorge Posada, was also seen enjoying the goods.

“Its a great crowd, the food is really fresh, I am really enjoying myself,” Posada said.

The restaurant is very spacious. Two-story-high ceilings, with fans creating the look of leaves turning above. It has three kitchens, including a raw bar and grill where the chefs burn Japanese bincho-tan charcoal to give the food that added touch.

“It’s the new hot spot," Johnson said, "but it's going to be a hot spot for a long time.”
