As the snowbirds fly back home to warmer climates, that’s a Floridian’s cue to start cashing in on summer deals at local hotels and resorts. And when it comes to staycations, we say go big, or stay home.
With that in mind, toss your finest Lacoste polos and Tom Ford shades into your Burberry weekender bag and head to The Breakers, where summer deals include room rates starting at $269 and $60 golf. Forget the terms "boutique," "plunge pool" and "ice bar," this classic, 140-acre resort is all Old Florida Charm and Opulence. After all, Mr. Historical Florida himself Henry Flagler built the original grounds – the Palm Beach Inn – in 1903.
We chatted up our Breakers experts for tips on everything from which room to book if you’re big pimpin’ to how to navigate the most challenging hole of golf ever (or at least at The Breakers).
I’m all about looks. What’s the least expensive room with the best view?
Partial Ocean View Superior.
I only lie around the pool long enough to finish my pina colada. What are the top five must-dos?
Bicycle tour of Palm Beach.
Walk to Worth Avenue.
The Imperial Suite is a newly renovated luxurious one-bedroom suite: 1,700 square feet, private living room and lounge area, wet bar, guest half bathroom, six-seat dining area, five separate step-out balconies with breathtaking ocean views. Expanded suite amenities include full sound system. Plus, personal concierge services, daily spa and fitness membership and welcome amenity.
I’m channeling my inner Tiger Woods (on the golf course, that is), whatcha got?
Number 16 is by far one the hardest holes on The Ocean Course. It plays 212 yards from all the way back. Two-thirds of the front part of the smallest green on the course is covered by a water hazard and the wind is always blowing hard on this hole.
The best hole at The Breakers Rees Jones Course, according to Director of Golf Dan St. Louis, is number six. It’s a par five that measures 556 yards from the Professional tees, a slight dogleg right that takes an accurate tee shot to find the fairway, then the fun begins. The second shot is the key to this hole. The further you can hit the second shot, the easier the approach to the green is. The green is surrounded by water on three sides -- left, right and long -- so the shorter the approach shot the better chance you have to make that elusive par. Anytime you make a par on this hole there is tremendous feeling of accomplishment.
I want to be naked as much as possible. What’s your best spa treatment?
The Moonlight Massage, a 90-minute massage offered outdoors in the resort's private Oceanfront Sanctuary exclusively on the nights of the full moon – the Moonlight Massage begins at sunset and continues as the full moon gently rises above the horizon and illuminates the evening sky. This treatment can be enjoyed as an individual’s own personal escape or shared by a couple for a truly romantic one-of-a-kind experience, complete with champagne and chocolate.
Forget t-shirts, I want my vacation souvenir to sparkle. What should I take home?
