Two people have been convicted of an elaborate housing fraud scheme that operated out of a vacant South Florida coin laundry.
A federal jury last week convicted Darryl Burke and Vicki Garland of Delray Beach on conspiracy, bank fraud and wire fraud charges. They face sentencing April 18.
Testimony showed the pair used the coin laundry address for a variety of fake companies. Evidence showed they falsified documents to obtain bank loans to invest in low-income neighborhoods. Then they enrolled the properties in U.S. Housing and Urban Development low-income programs to receive money from government vouchers.
Testimony also showed Burke and Garland falsely claimed to be disabled veterans to avoid property taxes.
Prosecutors say the pair had a waterfront residence, luxury cars and courtside tickets to Miami Heat games.
