2 Suffer Minor Shark Bites in Central Florida Waters

Officials said the two men were bitten within minutes of each other.

Two men have suffered minor shark bites in central Florida waters.

Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Capt. Tammy Marris says the men were in waist-deep waters off New Smyrna Beach when they were bitten Saturday.

Marris tells The Daytona Beach News-Journal that the men were bitten within a minute of each other. Both men described a shark roughly 3-feet long but it wasn't clear if the same shark bit each man.

Marris says a 25-year-old Oviedo resident suffered a bite on a shin, and a 43-year-old New Smyrna Beach resident suffered a bite to a feet. Both men went to the hospital for treatment.

Of the 30-plus shark bites since 2009 in Volusia and Flagler counties, 70 percent of them have occurred in New Smyrna Beach.
