NEW MARKETING CAMPAIGN AIMS TO ENCOURAGE FLORIDA RESIDENTS TO BUY MORE PRODUCE AND SEAFOOD PRODUCED IN THE STATE
 
The Florida Department of Agriculture launched the campaign last week with a series of television commercials on network and cable television in the state's 10 media markets. The commercials feature a recipe that can be made with Florida produce or seafood. The recipes include salsa, roasted vegetables, a salad, snapper and, for dessert, a strawberry parfait.
 
OFFICIAL WHO OVERSAW THOUSANDS OF ROADWAY LIGHTS IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PLEADS GUILTY TO TAKING BRIBES
 
George Brown faces a maximum 10-year prison sentence. Court records show that Brown accepted bribes worth more than $13,000 from the lighting contractor in 2011 and 2012 in exchange for using the contractor's products. The bribes took the form of merchandise including an air conditioning unit, a stainless steel refrigerator and a kitchen oven. The contractor cooperated with the FBI and recorded some conversations with Brown, who oversaw about 24,000 roadway lights for the county's Department of Public Works.
 
PINELLAS COUNTY SURPASSES BED TAX MILESTONE
 
Exceeding more than $600 million in hotel sales in the 2013 calendar year triggers a state rule that allows the Tampa Bay-area county to raise the tax on overnight stays by an extra 1 percent. Pinellas joins only five other Florida destinations that have achieved the state distinction as a high tourism impact county, including the mega resorts of South Florida and Orlando.
 
STATE HEALTH OFFICIALS LAUNCH NEW PROGRAM AIMED AT CURBING OBESITY RATES
 
State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. John Armstrong says ``the top public health threat to our future is weight.'' He said two-thirds of Floridians will be obese by 2030 if they don't make changes. The program includes demographic, behavioral and built environment measures relating to the community's healthy weight status. It will also provide data for health and weight-related research and encourage communities to continue their efforts to improve nutrition and increase physical activity.
 
1 DEAD, 1 INJURED IN DRIVE-BY SHOOTING
 
One man is dead and his brother is in the hospital following a shooting outside a Tampa housing complex on Sunday afternoon. Police say the men were tossing the football when a car drove by and shots were fired.
 
SOUTH FLORIDA CELEBRATES MLK DAY

South Florida will be honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with parades and celebrations Monday. Parades are scheduled in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and elsewhere in Broward and Miami-Dade.
