SEBELIUS DOING ACA DAMAGE CONTROL IN FLORIDA
The Obama administration's top health official is visiting Miami and Orlando to talk up the Affordable Care Act as fallout from the new law grows. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will visit Florida on Tuesday to discuss website enrollment. Sebelius and Obama have repeatedly apologized for a dismal launch of www.healthcare.gov.
TEEN SHOT BY CAREGIVER IN PINELLAS COUNTY
A 17-year-old boy was shot and wounded after he slipped out of his house without telling anyone, and then returned, leading one of his caregivers to presume he was an intruder. The teen was shot Saturday and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Pinellas County deputies say the teen was shot by his caregiver.
HIJACKER WHO RETURNED TO US SEEKS RELEASE ON BAIL
An American who returned from Cuba to face U.S. charges that he hijacked an airliner to Havana is seeking release on bail before trial. A hearing was set Tuesday for 56-year-old William Potts, who was convicted in Cuba of the 1984 hijacking of a New York-to-Miami Piedmont Airlines flight. Potts has pleaded not guilty to U.S. air piracy charges, which carry a prison sentence of between 20 years and life.
WOMAN GETS 2 1/2 YEARS FOR TODDLER'S OVERDOSE DEATH
A Tampa Bay area woman has been sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for her toddler daughter's fatal drug overdose. A Hernando County judge sentenced 29-year-old Tiffany Lynn Mitchell on Monday. She pleaded guilty in October to aggravated manslaughter. The charge normally carries up to 30 years in prison, but prosecutors had capped the sentence at 13 years as part of an open plea agreement.
BODY CONFIRMED TO BE MAN WHO FELL FROM PLANE
Miami-Dade police say they've confirmed that a body found in waters off South Florida is that of a man who fell from a private plane. An autopsy on Monday confirmed that the body found in a mangrove area Saturday morning was that of 42-year-old Gerardo Nales. Investigators weren't immediately releasing a cause of death, but no evidence of foul play has been reported.
COUPLE CARJACKED AT GUNPOINT IN LITTLE HAVANA
Police are investigating after a couple was carjacked at gunpoint at a gas station in Little Havana early Tuesday. The robbery happened around 2:30 a.m. at the Sun Flex station at 1599 West Flagler Street as the couple was pumping gas.
