NEW JOBLESS CLAIMS COMPUTER SYSTEM WORKING
Despite reports of glitches, state officials say a new jobless claims computer system is working. Department of Economic Opportunity spokeswoman Monica Russell says more than 50,000 people have successfully filed for claims in just two days. The new online $63 million system replaced a three-decade old system that was shut down last week.
FLORIDA HIGHWAY TROOPER ASKS COURT TO CLEAR HIS NAME
A Florida Highway Patrol trooper who got in trouble over giving breaks to state legislators wants an appeals court to clear his name. An attorney for Trooper Charles Swindle says the trooper is appealing a ruling that stated that Swindle deserved to get suspended. Swindle argued that he was carrying out a long-standing but unwritten policy of giving breaks on speeding tickets to legislators.
ORLANDO AIRPORT SET TO EXPAND
An aviation authority has approved expanding Orlando International Airport so that it can accommodate 45 million passengers a year. The $1.1 billion expansion plan approved by the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority will allow the airport to grow beyond its original design capacity of 25 million travelers annually.
ORANGE JUICE SALES FALL IN US SUPERMARKETS
Retail orange juice sales in U.S. supermarkets fell 1.1 percent in the recently completed 2012-13 citrus season, marking the 11th sales decline in the last 12 seasons. The Florida Department of Citrus says the downward trend has accelerated in recent months with OJ sales falling by 3.9 percent in the final period of 2012-13 for the four weeks ending Sept. 28.
JURY SELECTION CONTINUES IN TAYLOR SLAYING CASE
Jury selection is continuing in Miami for the trial of the alleged shooter in the 2007 killing of Washington Redskins star safety Sean Taylor. Circuit Judge Dennis Murphy says the panel will consist of 12 jurors and up to four alternates. Being tried on a first-degree murder charge is 23-year-old Eric Rivera Jr. He faces life in prison because he was only 17 at the time of the slaying.
SECURITY GUARD, 3 OTHERS SHOT AT OPA-LOCKA APARTMENT BUILDING
Police are investigating after a security guard and three others were shot at an Opa-locka apartment complex early Thursday. The shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. outside The Gardens apartments at 13180 Port Said Road, Opa-locka Police said.
