U.S. wildlife authorities say the Alabama shad may be a fish species that needs protection under the Endangered Species Act. The National Marine Fisheries Service has announced that it will conduct a review to determine whether the Alabama shad should be declared a threatened or endangered species. The agency regulates endangered species in the ocean.
FLORIDA TO RELEASE AUGUST UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES
Florida is releasing new unemployment numbers that could show whether or not the state's economic recovery is on hold. The state's unemployment rate has been flat at 7.1 percent for three straight months. New numbers will be released Friday. ADP, a payroll provider, reported last week that the state added 13,790 private sector jobs during the month of August
PINELLAS COUNTY MAY CHANGE AMBULANCE POLICY AT GAMES
Ambulances may soon park close to Pinellas County high school football stadiums on game nights in case paramedics need to respond to on-field medical emergencies. The school district's director of physical education made suggestions to the school board Thursday about how to improve treating game injuries.
EVENT TRANSFORMS PARKING SPACES INTO PUBLIC PARKS
As part of International Park(ing) Day, urban activists say they will transform parking spaces in downtown Miami into mini public parks to emphasize the need for more open space. The event being held Friday runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in front of the Miami-Dade College's Wolfson campus.
RAYS DROP GAME TO RANGERS, TIED ATOP WILDCARD
The Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers are now tied atop the AL wild-card race. The Cleveland Indians pulled within a half-game in the standings with a win over Houston. The Rangers and Rays each have 10 games left; Cleveland has nine.
SOUTH FLORIDIANS FLOCK TO APPLE STORES FOR NEW iPHONE
Customers crowded Apple stores throughout South Florida early Friday to be among the first to get their hands on the latest iPhone. Some shoppers began lining up Thursday morning at the store on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach in anticipation of the release of the 4c and 5s iPhones, which go on sale beginning at 8 a.m. local time Friday.
