Teen Confesses to Shooting Three In After-School Fight: Cops

Shooting occurred near Miami Carol City High School campus after school was dismissed

Miami Gardens police arrested a juvenile they say confessed to shooting three other young people near Miami Carol City High School Wednesday afternoon, said Det. Carlton Coleman.

Authorities believe an after-school fight at the Victory gas station escalated when the teen opened fire, but Coleman said they have yet to determine a motive.

Police officers who patrol the area heard gunshots around 2:40 p.m. and rushed to the gas stationat 183rd Street and NW 32nd Avenue, where they found young people scattering in panic.

"Screaming, running, everyone was taking cover," said a young witness on the scene.

The three wounded young people were innocent bystanders struck when someone pulled out a gun and started shooting during a fight, said John Schuster, a school board spokesman.

Schuster said said two of the victims, a boy and a girl, were students at the high school. The gender of the third victim is not yet known.

Fights are common in the area around the school, according to Coleman.

"That's why we have our officers that are here in this area during this time of day," he said.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said one of the victims was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center while the other two were transported by ground.

Coleman said all three are expected to survive.
