Toddler in Urgent Need of Bone Marrow Transplant

Donations are needed to pay for costly leukemia treatment.

Two -year-old Joseth Celedon has battled leukemia twice. He’s in remission at Jackson’s Holtz Children’s Hospital, but doctors fear he won't be for long.

“We are very good to treat leukemia in a child up front but once the leukemia comes back as it did in Joseth’s case it’s very difficult to treat it. A bone marrow transplant is the only way he could have a long-term survival,” said University of Miami pediatrician Dr. Martin Andreansky.

Joseth is from Nicaragua. Doctors there told his parents there was nothing more they could do for their only child.

His heartbroken mother Carla Osejo says they’ve been dealing with this for a year . It has been very difficult. A family member reached out to TV host Carolina Diago who’s from Nicaragua

“I’ve been working for the past year knocking on many doors asking for help for this child and I came to International Kids Fund,” said Diago at a news conference to launch a fundraising campaign.

Her ex-husband Grammy Award Winner Luis Enrique is also involved in helping IKF raise $300,000 to pay for the bone marrow transplant. First, Joseth will undergo a week of intensive chemo then he’ll be hospitalized at least another six weeks.

“He’s an incredible kid. He’s only 2 years old and he has this will to live, this willpower to really get through this,” said Enrique.

Doctors say there’s a small window of opportunity - only a few weeks - to get the transplant done.   There are a couple of potential stem cell donors that could be a match.

Now they just need donations from the community

Without the transplant Joseth has a 10 to 20 per cent chance of survival. With the transplant there is a 60 per cent chance he’ll be cured.
