Broward College Named to Top Ten List

Aspen Institute names Broward College one of top ten community colleges in country

Broward College has earned a big honor from an educational organization that could see it earning a big paycheck.

The Washington, D.C.-based Aspen Institute named Broward College one of the top 10 community colleges in the country. The announcement was made at a "State of the College" address Wednesday by President J. David Armstrong, Jr.

"I think even better than a lot of the rankings you see in magazines and things is it's not based on the number of library books you have or how much your endowment is, it's based on the performance of your students," Armstrong said. "So how well our faculty are doing in the teaching and learning of the classroom and the support that we give our students to succeed."

Universities Help the Local Economy

The honor makes the college a finalist for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, which will be awarded in March.

Early Wednesday, a banner was put up for everyone to see and students were beaming with pride.

"I'm doing good in school, the teachers help me out real good," culinary management student Christa Holder said. "Like, if I have a problem I can go to them and talk to them about it and they'll find a way to help me."

Broward College serves more than 66,000 students annually and recently played host to Vice President Joe Biden's wife Jill Biden, who delivered the college's commencement address in May.
