A Senate panel at the Capitol killed the DREAM Act proposal that would have provided cheaper college tuition for undocumented students in Florida.
More than a dozen college-aged young adults from South Florida took the trip to Tallahassee to support the proposal.
The Senate panel killed the controversial bill in a 4-3 vote, thus ending its chance to make the Florida Legislature floor.
If passed, the bill would have granted in-state tuition status to unodcumented students, who currently pay out-of-state tuition that is nearly three times higher than for Florida residents. Now they must continue to pay that amount.
The federal DREAM Act has long been a controversial bill, being criticized for it's support of illegal immigration. It has not been signed into law. The two Florida proposals have proved just as controversial from the start.
