Cars Destroyed After Auto Trailer Catches Fire in Hialeah

Truck bursts into flames, destroying nine cars on trailer

Nine cars were destroyed after an auto transport truck burst into flames early Thursday morning in Hialeah, authorities said.

The incident happened on the eastbound ramp to State Road 112 at Okeechobee Road, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Capt. Andy Alvarez said.

Alvarez said that when firefighters arrived at the scene around 2 a.m., the truck was on fire, and wind helped the fire move quickly to the nine cars on the trailer.

"It could have been worse, when we got here we encountered multiple explosions due to the amount of the different metals that the cars are made out of," Alvarez said. "Once you start applying water on the magnesiums and the berylliums, metals like that, it causes explosions so it made for a good fireworks show."

No injuries were reported but the truck and all the vehicles are a complete loss. Alvarez said they had been sold and were heading overseas.

Investigators were at the scene trying to determine the cause of the fire. Drivers were advised to stay away from the area.
