Coast Guard Intercepts 5,000 Pounds of Drugs in Caribbean

The combined value of the drugs was estimated to be over $48 million.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced Friday that it intercepted and seized 4,000 pounds of cocaine and 940 pounds of marijuana while patrolling in the Caribbean.

The drugs were seized by the Coast Guard Cutter Dallas during two separate incidents when the crew witnessed members of two go-fast boats tossing bales into the water, officials said.

In December the Coast Guard found a go-fast boat north of Honduras with 77 packages of cocaine, estimated to be worth $48 million, according to the military force.

The four aboard were transferred to Naval Station Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

Later in the month, the Coast Guard also intercepted a ship southwest of Jamaica. It found 16 packages of marijuana, valued at $852,000.

The Coast Guard said they took the detained smugglers to Jamaican Defense Force officials.

The drugs were offloaded from the cutter in Key West on Thursday.

The Cutter Dallas is on its last patrol before it will be decommissioned in March.
