Cops Search for Driver Who Struck Pedestrians in Hallandale Beach

2 pedestrians hit by car in Hallandale Beach, one suffered serious head injury

Hallandale Beach Police are asking for the public's help in finding a driver who struck two pedestrians, leaving one with a serious head injury and the other with a broken arm.

Police say Vagiff Safarov, 61, struck the two people at the Flanigan's at 4 North Federal Highway on Feb. 12.

A Broward judge issued a warrant for Safarov's arrest, charging him with three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, police said.

Police say Safarov is aware that authorities are trying to locate him and is evading law enforcement.

He drives a yellow 2001 Suzuki Vitara SUV with Florida tag 180 XYR. Anyone who knows of his whereabouts is asked to call the Hallandale Beach Police at 954-457-1438.

Surveillance video shows the driver gunning his engine and hitting two men, and literally driving over one of them. Another camera shows the SUV dragging one of the victims and another victim chasing the vehicle.

"It was just instincts. I put my foot up because he was coming right at us and then he revved the engine and let loose and hit us again and that's when he struck my arm," said victim Joby Benson.

Benson also explained his friend's injuries.

"They said he ran over his legs, so they're black and blue. His arms are black and blue. He's got scabs all over his body," he said.

Hallandale Police Chief Dwayne Flournoy said there is all-out manhunt for the driver.

"We don't know what he was thinking," he said.
