Cops Target Uninsured Motorists in Miami-Dade

Massive operation to find drivers with fraudulent car insurance Wednesday

Authorities in Miami-Dade were conducting a massive operation Wednesday that targets drivers with fake or fraudulent car insurance.

The fraudulent proof of motor vehicle insurance operation is the largest of its kind in Florida law enforcement history and includes over 20 local and state agencies, officials said.

Drivers who are stopped by police officers for traffic violations or are involved in motor vehicle crashes between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. will be asked to show proof of insurance. Officers will radio in the insurance card info to a command center where on-hand insurance representatives from several companies will verify their information.

It's illegal to drive in Florida without insurance and anyone caught with forged paperwork will be charged with a third-degree felony for carrying fraudulent proof of motor vehicle insurance.

Costs associated with crashes involving uninsured motorists are eventually passed on the those with valid insurance, and insurance rates escalate every year due to uninsured drivers, officials said.
