Deal Would Help Elderly Man Avoid Trial in Crash That Killed Two Women

79-year-old man offered deal in crash that killed two women in Miami-Dade

The elderly man who killed two women when he crashed his his car into a Miami-Dade beauty salon last year was in court Friday where he offered a deal that would have him avoid prison time.

Pedro Ruiz, 72, won't go to trial on a careless driving charge if he pays a $5,000 fine and has his driver's license revoked forever, according to the deal offered during Friday's court hearing.

Ruiz has a month to either accept the deal or take the case to trial. A civil lawsuit is still pending in the case.

Police say Ruiz was behind the wheel of his SUV when he accidentally hit the accelerator and plowed into the storefront of Celeste & Co. Boutique on on Bird Road and Southwest 134 Avenue on August 2, 2011.

Two women were killed, including customer Laymet Albelo, 27, and the salon's owner, 33-year-old Celeste Gaitan, who was almost six months pregnant.

Ruiz is the father of Latin salsa singer Rey Ruiz.
