Disabled Miami Man's Prosthetic Legs, Car Stolen

Miami man who uses a wheelchair was the victim of terrible theft

Armando Fontaine has lived the last 20 years of his life in a wheelchair after he lost his legs to an infection.

The Army veteran said he has felt safe in his home since he moved in in the 70's -- until now.

"My wife called me and said, 'The car is not there. They stole it,'" Fontaine said.

Feet away from his wheelchair ramp, right outside his Miami home -- his gray 1996 Nissan Sentra was taken sometime Monday night.

But it's not just the car that's gone. His wheelchair mount and footrest were also stolen.

"The only thing we've got, the transportation to go to the hospital," he said.

Fontaine's wife Marta takes him to the hospital every week. He is blind in one eye and needs treatments.

"I need my car for my husband," she pleaded.

So now, the Fontaines sit in their Miami home. They are waiting and hoping their car is found soon so they can get back to their lives.

"I've got to go to the hospital next week," Fontaine said. "I don't know how I'm going to get there."

Editor's note: This story originally said that Armando Fontaine's prosthetic legs were taken because they were believed to be in his car, but it turns out the family still had them, as the family has since told NBC Miami. The story has been updated to reflect that change.
