A Naples doctor arrested for stealing paintings from a Collier County hospital was released from jail on bond, a jail official said.
Dr. Douglas Paone was caught on surveillance video as he entered the hospital, took a painting and hid it under his while lab coat, authorities were quoted by WBBH as saying.
He is not employed by the hospital, but he has admitting privileges to see various patients. Dr. Paone used his own key card to get in the Naples hospital on Oct. 31, authorities said.
Detectives say the painting is of an osprey carrying a fish and is valued at $750. Paone was seen on the video walking through the doctors' mezzanine area, taking the painting out to the parking garage, authorities said.
Paone told authorities Monday that he did not steal the art, and instead was borrowing it, WBBH said.
"It was unusual. Everybody did the right thing though. Their security system worked and we put the person in jail because it is a felony theft," Naples Police Department Lt. John Barkley said.
Paone was released on Nov. 4 on $5,000 bond. He faces a charge of grand theft $300 to $5,000, a jail official said. It wasn’t immediately known if he had an attorney.
