When the NFL unveiled new uniform sets designed by Nike earlier this week, the Miami Dolphins' uniform set did not include any major changes. That might not be the case come 2013.
Team president Mike Dee said Wednesday that the team will consider changes to its logo and uniforms over the next few years - though no changes will be made before the 2012 season.
"I don't think you'd ever see us consider something as radical as Tampa Bay did going from the orange to the pewter gray," Dee told the Sun Sentinel. "But I think we're actively looking at ways to keep the brand current while respecting the great tradition and iconic value that we've been fortunate to inherit."
The Dolphins have not made many major alterations to its look since starting play in 1966. The helmeted dolphin surrounded by an orange sunburst has undergone a few minor changes - the most recent coming in 1997.
Dee said the team would solicit input from Dolphins fans, but he does not want to do anything that would erode the Dolphins' brand identity too much. "We're anxious to talk to fans, and whatever we do it is going to be with great reverence and respect for the history and iconic nature of all the marks and symbols fans have come to know and like," he said.
"We're not looking to enact any radical changes," he added. " We will keep great respect of the history and tradition of the logo and the look and feel of the team."
With Nike taking over the NFL apparel contract this year (Reebok had formerly supplied uniforms), only the Seattle Seahawks opted for a major uniform redesign (making them look kind of like the NFL version of the Oregon Ducks).

It does not sound like the Dolphins would opt for such a drastic change as that, but with the team in such dire need of buzz of any kind, a new uniform set couldn't hurt.
