Woman killed after driver puts car into wrong gear: Police

An elderly woman was killed when she was struck by a pickup truck in Hialeah Tuesday morning, police said.

The incident happened around 8 a.m. in the area of 16th Avenue and West 53rd Street as the woman, who was on the sidewalk, was either walking or waiting for a bus, Hialeah Police spokesman Det. Carl Zogby said.

According to Zogby, the driver of the vehicle was parked in a nearby parking lot when they put the truck into the wrong gear and ended up hitting the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The driver was parking in the bank next to the sidewalk, apparently when he goes to exit the truck either by human error or mechanical malfunction, the pickup truck continues to move forward, it jumps onto the sidewalk then onto the street," Zogby said.

The truck also hit a private school bus that was carrying 16 children. None of the children was injured, police said.

The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police, Zogby said.

Police are still investigating the incident and haven't identified the victim, who was in her 70s.

"We're not treating this as any sort of criminal act, we're treating at this point just a tragic accident," Zogby said.
