Front Runners Win Big In Miami-Dade County Elections

Hialeah's mayoral runoff election will be held on Nov. 15

Hialeah's next mayor wasn't decided in Tuesday's election, clearing the way for a runoff race on Nov. 15.

Incumbent Carlos Hernandez ended the election with 39.53 percent of the vote and Raul Martinez with 34.46. Former state legislator Rudy Garcia will be left out of the runoff election as he garnered just 25.68 percent

No candidate received a majority of the votes in the election, forcing the runoff.

In Miami Beach it's a different story. Incumbent Mayor Matti Herrera Bower ran away by taking almost  60 percent of the votes cast.  Comedian Steve Berke was her closest challenger with just over 23 percent.

"I heard the people that are not that happy. I will try my best to make them happy, to make them feel I care also for them," Bower said.

Miami City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff avoided a runoff by pulling off a big a win over Kata Callahan. Sarnoff 52.79 percent pushed him to a victory. Callahan ended her election night with almost 20 percent of the votes in District 2. Incumbent Willy Gort defeated Shawn Selleck with 68.27 percent of the votes in District 1.

In Homestead, Mayor Steven Bateman faced off with former council member Steve Losner. Bateman retained his seat with 57.22 percent of the vote.

Bateman told The Miami Herald his focus on economic development played in his favor.

“Twenty-two months ago, the dorms next to the stadium were filled with cobwebs and were dormant,” Bateman told the Herald. “I brought the people from Charter Schools USA. ... I brought the people from La Ley. They spent millions of dollars here to Homestead.”

Other commission races included Group 6 in Miami Beach, and Groups 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 in Hialeah.
