Family Escapes North Miami Apartment Fire

Six people rescued from burning apartment early Wednesday

Six people are staying at a hotel after fire forced them from their North Miami apartment building early Wednesday.

Flames broke out just before 1:37 a.m. at Northeast 129th Street and 6th Avenue. Firefighters rescued seven people out of the burning building, plus a dog named "Kisses."

Jackie Rojas says she went to charge her cell phone and the charger "blew up."

"It burned her," said her mother, Jackeline Orozco. By the time Orozco went to look, "the fire was up," she said.

Orozco and her husband, Abigail Rojas  tried to battle flames with water but it was no use. Rojas said flames singed his ear and hair, but he made it out okay with his family.

Red Cross workers helped the Orozco-Rojas family and their neighbors make hotel arrangements.

E.J. Ramirez, 8, said he was grateful his hamster, "Hugo," was unharmed. He was headed for a hotel room with his mom and dad early this morning.

We're okay, Rojas kept saying in Spanish.

A firefighter was injured and treated at the scene. No one was seriously hurt.
