Family of 6 Displaced by Fire in Davie

Fire sweeps through apartment in Davie late Thursday

A family of six was able to escape without injuries after a fire swept through their Davie apartment Thursday night, authorities said.

Davie Fire Rescue spokeswoman Susan DiPuglia said firefighters responded to the University Park Apartments in the 7000 block of Nova Drive around 11:40 p.m. and saw smoke and flames coming from the apartment.

The fire alarms had sounded and everyone in the building, including the family in the apartment, had evacuated, DiPuglia said. The fire was extinguished without injuries and no other apartments were affected.

DiPuglia said the cause of the fire is being investigated but said it may have started in the apartment's laundry room.

The family, which includes two adults and four children, was displaced but is being assisted by the Red Cross, DiPuglia said.
