A Florida woman was arrested after police say she left her two young children alone in a car in cold weather while she went hog hunting, authorities said.
Kayla Marie Shavers, 30, was arrested on two counts of child neglect after leaving her 9-year-old and 8-month-old kids in the car in 38-degree weather, the Pasco County Sheriff's Office said.
She was being held on $4,000 bond Friday, jail records showed. It was unknown whether she has an attorney.
The older child called 911 because of the cold, saying "A police car would be warmer," WPTV reported.
Deputies arrived and waited 40 minutes for Shavers to return to the car. When she got there, she claimed she was close enough to the car to respond if the kids needed her.
"She said she left the keys for her son to start the car if it got cold. He didn't start the car, he couldn't," said Corporal Sean Kennedy, according to WPTV.
Shaver, who was dressed in camouflage when she came out of the woods and in her mugshot, told deputies she was hunting the hogs because they were tearing up her property.
Sheriff Chris Nocco credited the older child for calling police. "He may have saved that 8 month old baby's life. So kudos to that little 9 year old boy," Nocco said.
The children were turned over to family members.
