Fort Lauderdale Authorities Search for Mystery Swimmer

The body of a 21-year-old man was removed from the New River Friday night, but it wasn't known if two incidents were connected

The body of a 21-year-old man visiting from out of state was removed from the New River Friday night, Fort Lauderdale Police said.

Police identified him as Blair Robinson.

Police said their dive team, assisted by the Broward Sheriff's Office Marine Unit, found his body in the river.

No other details were immediately available.

But earlier Friday, authorities were searching for a mystery swimmer in the Fort Lauderdale river after a witness said the man was never seen coming out of the water.

The unidentified man was seen swimming in the New River waterway near the Andrews Avenue bridge early Friday morning, but a witness called police saying the man never got out, according to Fort Lauderdale Police.

Police and Fire Rescue dive teams searched for the man underwater, but couldn't find him, according to officials. Police said they were searching the nearby area in an effort to locate the man.

Aerial footage of the area did not show an active scene by the bridge.
