Funeral Wednesday for Walmart Loss Prevention Officer Shot by Would-Be Shoplifter

Worker killed over $16 t-shirts to be laid to rest in Coral Springs

Funeral services are being held in Coral Springs Wednesday for a Walmart loss prevention officer who was shot and killed by a would-be shoplifter last week.

Lewis Jhon will be laid to rest following a 10:30 a.m. service at Kraeer Funeral Home at 1655 University Drive.

Family and friends remembered Jhon as a hard working man at a wake Tuesday night.

"He was a great guy, he'd give you the shirt off his back," said Joe Defilippi, who said he worked with Jhon for 20 years at Riker's Island jail in New York. "One of the hardest working correctional officers I ever met in my life, always willing to help and train people when they came in, no matter how old they were, new or old, he always helped you out.

"He was always there whenever you needed him. Definitely a person you can count on."

Jhon, 49, was working at the Walmart at 555 W. Atlantic Boulevard in Margate Friday evening when he detained 22-year-old Terrell Johnson for trying to steal $16 worth of undershirts, police said.

At one point, Johnson shot Jhon near the front entrance of the store and fled the scene on foot, police said. Jhon was rushed to North Broward Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Johnson's body was later found in the 500 block of Northwest 51st Street with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
