Google Chrome Update Scam May Infect Computer With Malware

Cybersecurity experts are warning Google Chrome users of a widespread scam that infects their computers with malware.

The scam injects and rewrites script onto poorly-protected web pages, creating fake issues for users to resolve. The malware is capable of collecting users’ personal information, as well as tracking history of websites visited.

A "HoeflerText font wasn’t found" popup message appears, which prompts users to download an update that is actually infected with malware.

The popup appears to be legitimate, but experts say once users click download, they are officially infected.

The scam only targets Chrome browsers on Windows. Mac users are safe, for now.
