Police are investigating after religious statues at a Hialeah church were discovered badly broken and vandalized Sunday.

The discovery was made at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at 4497 West 1st Avenue Sunday morning, police said.

"Religion and whatever you have as a religion, you have to respect everyone's religion," said churchgoer Alicia Alonso.

Police said someone hit the statues, which are outside, with an unknown object. The church was not broken into.

A Jesus statue had its hands damaged and nose broken off. One Mary statue had the hands broken off and other damages, while a second Mary statue also had damages.

"One of our parishioners came and brought the hands of the blessed mother and then when I came here I saw it was not only the hands but also the face, " said Father Francisco Hernandez of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Hialeah Police said they are investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
