Woman Tried To Kill Baby With Rock: MCSO

19-year-old Elizabeth Garcia was stopped by witnesses when she allegedly tried to bash a two-month-old with a concrete rock

A Marathon woman was arrested Friday, accused of attempting to kill a two-month old baby by hitting it with a concrete rock.

Elizabeth Garcia, 19, was caught on video trying to harm the baby, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, but was stopped by witnesses before a piece of concrete in her hand made contact with child.

She was charged with attempted murder of a child and child abuse after officials with the Department of Children and Families contacted MCSO on Friday afternoon to report possession of the video.

MDSO Deputy Becky Herrin said the video shows Garcia holding the baby with one hand and the rock in another, refusing to hand the child over to a second woman trying to take it away.

Garcia then tried to strike the baby with the rock, according to Herrin, but was grabbed by two men. The second woman then took the child from Garcia by force.

MCSO reports that on August 18, allegedly the same day the video was filmed, Garcia was arrested when she pulled a knife during a confrontation with deputies responding to an emergency call.

No one at the residence at the time of the confrontation with police mentioned the incident with the baby, Herrin said.

It is not immediately known what the relationship is between Garcia and the baby, who filmed the video, or how it came to be possessed by DCF.

Arrest records list Garcia as a student and cashier/food prep worker in Marathon.
