Man Arrested in Kidnapping of 10-Year-Old Miami Boy

Man facing kidnapping charges for taking 10-year-old off street

Authorities say they've arrested a man in the kidnapping of a 10-year-old boy in Miami last month.

Arlen Freyre, 28, was booked into jail just after 1 a.m. Friday on charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment of a child under age 13, interference with custody and two counts of battery, according to jail records.

The kidnapping happened on Nov. 4, in the area of Northwest 34th Street near 27th Avenue in Allapattah. Police said the incident happened when two boys, 10 and 14 years old, were walking on the street. Freyre got out of his Hummer and said "Is your mom looking for you?" authorities said.

Witnesses said he grabbed the 10-year-old and pushed him into the car, authorities said.

The suspect drove the victim, Emmet Green, to the area of Northwest 1st Avenue and 96th Street in Miami, where he ordered Green to get out of the car, police said.

"Keeping out children, some of our community's most vulnerable out of harm's way is at the very core of the law enforcement mission," said Miami Police Chief Manny Orosa said in a statement.

Authorities said the child remembered details of the car, like that it had a child's seat in it.

Orosa also appealed to anyone who recognizes Freyre and knows of any other cases, to please call police.

The incident was random, said Special Agent in Charge Addy Villanueva.

"He did admit he did pick up the child. What his motive was, we still don't know," Villanueva said. "Thank God the child made it very difficult for this individual, his tenacity, his will to get out of that vehicle."

"Mainly, I thought he was going to lock me up in his house and not let me do anything," Green told NBC Miami shortly after the frightening encounter.

Freyre was being held without bond Friday. It was unknown whether he has an attorney.
