Authorities say a man has died after being pulled from the swimming portion of a triathlon in southwest Florida.

Another racer alerted lifeguards that the man was struggling in the rough waters Sunday. North Naples Fire District Capt. Chuck Bacon says the man was brought to shore on a paddleboard.

The man was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of death was not released.

Organizers of the HITS Endurance triathlon tell the Naples Daily News that the man's death was a tragedy and racer safety is their first priority.

Authorities declined to release the man's name, citing the wishes of his family.

The man was among 300 people participating in the Sprint Distance event. The race includes a half-mile swim, a 12.4-mile bike race and a 3.1-mile run.
