72-year-old dies after truck goes into canal

An elderly man was killed when his truck drove into a Plantation canal Monday night, officials said.

The incident happened shortly before 9:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Southwest 69th Avenue, Plantation Fire Department Battalion Chief Joel Gordon said.

According to Gordon, witnesses saw the pickup truck drive into the canal and saw the 72-year-old driver float to the surface.

Two neighbors jumped into a boat and paddled out to the man and were able to get him to shore by the time rescue workers arrived and found he wasn't breathing and was in cardiac arrest with no pulse.

Emergency workers were able to restore the man's pulse but he was pronounced dead at Westside Regional Medical Center, Gordon said.

The man was later identified as Neville Magnus.

No one else was in the truck. The incident is being investigated and authorities will attempt to recover the vehicle from the canal, Gordon said.

Police said witnesses told investigators that the truck was moving slowly when it went into the canal, and there were no signs of skid marks or braking.
